7 Places on Mallorca That Are Famous for Their Charming Towns, Fresh Seafood, and Picturesque Beaches

Автор: coalition strengthen 16.05.2022

Here are some of the best places on the island to eat and explore, as recommended by a native, now that there are direct flights between New York and Mallorca.

In May of 2020, my family and I relocated to Mallorca, the largest of the Spanish Balearic Islands. At the time, the island was experiencing a level of tranquility that only occurs once every hundred years. The picturesque towns, crystal clear waters, and iconic fincas were only frequented by residents of the region (Spanish farmhouses).

Our glamorous expat dreams of late-night tapas hopping and traveling to new cities every weekend were abruptly put on hold the moment we arrived in Madrid from New York in March 2022. The pandemic was the reason for this. Since both my husband and I are fortunate enough to be able to work from home (he in marketing and I with my jewelry line, Zahava), we made the decision to move to the breathtakingly beautiful island of Mallorca in order to weather the proverbial storm.

We were able to thoroughly investigate this enchanted location because there were no dordle tourists in sight, so there were no lines, no traffic, and no need for reservations. We had free reign over the castle. Now that things have settled down, the world has once again become accessible, and the island is teeming with life. Here is a guide to exploring Mallorca like a local, complete with some of the most magnificent restaurants, beaches, and hotels that we've found along the way. Traveling to Mallorca is now easier than ever thanks to a newly launched direct flight between New York and Mallorca offered by United.

Palma

Palma, the island's capital and largest city, is easy to overlook, particularly for tourists who travel to Mallorca for its world-famous beaches. However, there is a wide variety of cute cafes and cultural experiences to be had in this city that is pleasantly surprising in its robustness. Because of the way the roads are constructed, it is often necessary to drive through Palma in order to get to another town, which is why it is a good idea to base yourself here if you plan to explore the entire island, which is larger than you might think it is. Since we live in Palma, going to Mercat de l'Olivar, the largest fresh market on the island, first thing in the morning is one of our family's all-time favorite ways to start the day. You can anticipate exquisite produce, pasta made from scratch, and a sprawling fish market here. Both Fornet de la Soca, famous for its Mallorcan baked goods with a twist, and Palma Bread, a Swedish bakery known for its homemade sourdough (they fly their flour in from Sweden — seriously), are two of our favorite places to stop while in Mallorca.

It is always warm and beautiful in Palma, perhaps even more so than in other parts of the island, and there are some beautiful hikes and bike rides just outside of the city. You can get a bike from Rapha if you want (and green juice).

When it's time for lunch, we frequently visit Cafe Riutort. Riutort is run by a friendly couple from Mallorca, and every day it serves a unique vegetarian menu that is determined by what is available at the local market that is at its peak of freshness (don't leave without trying the pistachio sea salt cookies!). Another customer favorite is the Bar des Mercat, which is located in the Santa Catalina market. It is a simple grill and counter, and the chef there will cook anything that you see being sold there (go for the fresh squid and some artichokes).
