President Xi Jinping on the 11th, Chinese state media focused on the call being made on New Year's Eve, interpreting that the U.S. expressed goodwill toward China.

In an editorial, China's state-run Global Times newspaper said, "The most noteworthy time is when President Biden delivered his New Year's greetings to the Chinese people on the eve of the Chinese lunar new year."

"President Biden seems to want to balance the recent hard-line message from the new U.S. administration to the public through this goodwill," he added.

Both countries did not disclose how long the two leaders talked, and the White House only disclosed short and selective details of the call, but said "both sides were in line with outside expectations."

The Global Times said President Xi and President Biden have contacted each other several times and are familiar with each other, adding that they expect a more reliable communication channel between China and the U.S. over the next four years than their predecessor Donald Trump.

Citing President Biden's remarks, "There is no need for a clash between the U.S. and China, but there will be extreme competition," he interpreted that the call between the leaders of the two countries on New Year's Eve showed that President Biden wanted to focus on "competition," not conflict.

The Global Times also pointed out that the U.S. Department of Defense said it would set up a Chinese task force to establish a defense strategy against China, saying, "It is a high risk for the U.S. to be tougher on China."

"Managing differences between China and the U.S. is a key issue that the Biden administration should seriously discuss with China," he said.

He then stressed, "It is the victory of modern human civilization and wisdom that the two countries win, and on the contrary, it will be a tragedy for the entire human race if the two countries reach a serious impulse."

The Global Times said, "The leaders of the two countries jointly showed a good faith attitude to enhance mutual understanding and control differences between China and the U.S. on a special day," adding that they expect the two countries' societies to respond.
