Background: I have just recently sold a pricey item to a buyer with over 200 positive feedback - no negatives or neutrals. Immediately following the sale, I received an email from a different user 0 feedback and newly reginstered that day claiming to have won the item with a request to send to a different address. I responded that I would only send to the address on paypal with a signature confirmation. I received no response and the ebay ID is now unregistered. My first thought was that the buyer was trying to scam me using a different ID so that his good ID would not be reported. Then when I send the item, I'll be faced with another scam like an INR. Now I am thinking that the note was sent from a third party trying to scam us both and that the initial buyer is actually legit. Either way - my red flags are up. Wondering expert sellers - what would you think in this situation - and how would you proceed to protect yourself from being scammed. By sending to the paypal address and using signature confirmation am I completely protected? I have already submitted a report that the buyer made an unreasonable demand. Thank you in advance for your feedback! The OP has made it pretty clear three times that it was via eBay messages. New sellers may entirely miss the fact it's a different buyer or as in this case they notice but are not tipped off to the obvious scam. Original legit buyer gets a notice their item has shipped, by the time they start to wonder where it is the seller has shipped to the other address, the package has been recieved and the contents have be sent on to somewhere on the planet. Original buyer files an INR, seller loses the money because they have to refund and the item itself, well it's long gone. The scammer in this case send messages to dozens of sellers all at once and hope to snag at least a couple before eBay shuts them down. It's most likely an uninvolved third party trying to take advantage of the fact that you're a relatively new seller selling an expensive item. It's happened before and people who aren't as cautious as you are which is a good thing, by the way! All buyers have 100% positive feedback. Sellers have been unable to leave neutral or negative feedback for buyers since May 20, 2008 -- nearly 10 years. We can't help wondering how the non-buyer member got your email address. First of all, ebay forbids sellers to leave negative feedback for buyers, no matter how bad their behavior or deserving of a negative. Sellers can only leave positive feedback. So buyers feedback program is pretty meaningless per ebay and it may not be a true representation of buyers performance. Second, this is a classic scam. Some stranger was trying to steal from you by tricking you. This is reported a lot here. The fact that they are unregistered should give you a clue. If you have the legitimate buyer and they pay, you send. Don't entertain unknown fake buyers, period. Don't respond to emails from unknowns pretending to be buyers. Did your real buyer pay? Thank you for your response. I didn't know that sellers could not leave negative feedback for buyers. You did get me curious about how the third party was able to contact me. I searched for a sold item on ebay and I was still able to contact the seller. So I am guessing the scammer searched recently closed expensive items and started contacting the sellers with a new address with the hopes that the unexperienced seller me! I actually asked the original buyer why he requested that I send to a new address and he says he has no idea what I am talking about. Thank you for your response! Egad so much to learn on ebay - it's like an obstacle course now vs the friendly neighborhood garage sale. You'll think I'm a jerk - but I reported the actual buyer who paid. As I mentioned, I initially thought it was buyer who was making the new address request. I wanted to make sure something was on record before I sent in case an INR popped up down the road. Will this affect him terribly? If so, I will see if I can retract the report once everything has gone smoothly. The OP has made it pretty clear three times that it was via eBay messages. You didn't know what was going down. I don't know what you reported or how and I don't know what would happen, if anything, to the buyer, but hope it all works out. I am glad that you got wise to everything and would only ship your items only to the confirmed address. Also, If a legitimate buyer ever requests to ship to a different address, insist that the buyer change the shipping address on their PayPal account to where they want it shipped and reconfirm it. Also, sometimes tricksters send fake emails that could compromise their targets accounts, if links are clicked or the target logs in from that email. Usually those are spoof paypal email claiming that the buyer has paid. What I do as a matter of habit, is to log into paypal to confirm each sale and payment. Happy and prosperous new year to you!
