It took a few tries but I finally logged into the webpage and sent the faxes I needed to get out for work. Converts existing fax numbers.

Integrated support for digital forms and signatures. Converts existing fax numbers. Integrates with other services. No dedicated mobile apps. It's our Editors' Choice for fax services. While the practice of sending faxes persists, actual fax machines can finally be left on the trash-heap of technological history, thanks to such as HelloFax. This excellent service has a slick, modern interface that makes it easy to send and receive faxes from the web or from the comfort of your email client. Its integrated form-filling and digital-signature features mean that you'll never have to go through the hassle of printing and manually sending documents again. It's our Editors' Choice winner for online fax services. Pricing and Features HelloFax has a range of paid service tiers, the main difference between them being the number of pages and the number of team members, or people allowed to use the service at a time. This tier gets you 300 total pages of sent or received faxes per month, and up to five team members. If you need to add more team members or more pages, or if you want access to the HelloFax API, you can contact the company about an Enterprise-level account. HelloFax also provides a free tier that lets you send faxes, but not receive them. I'll discuss that in more detail below. If you exceed your allocated HelloFax pages for the month, you have to pay 5 cents per additional page. A nickel per extra page is a pretty good deal among online fax services. MyFax charges an overage fee of 10 cents per page, and takes 12 cents per page. At the other end of the range are MetroFax and Nextiva vFAX, which each charge a mere 3 cents per page. Of course, if you foresee sending hundreds upon hundreds of faxes per month, consider. That's a tad pricey, but its sheer volume is unmatched and it also delivers an excellent faxing experience. Sending faxes to numbers outside the US doesn't cost extra money with HelloFax. Instead, the service deducts a certain number of pages from your monthly allotment depending on the destination. It's a bit tricky to understand at first, but a quick glance at the clears up most issues. A one-page fax to Finland, for example, counts as five pages against your monthly allowance. On the other hand, faxing to some international numbers is effectively the same as sending them to and from US numbers. Sending a one-page fax to anywhere in Austria, Canada, or the UK, among other locations, costs just one page from your monthly allotment. HelloFax offers help desk support via the support system. I much prefer this to services that only offer phone support. In my time with HelloFax, I found the support staff to be extremely helpful and quick in responding to my questions. Free Faxing and More HelloFax offers a free plan, with some restrictions. For free, you get a mere five pages of sent faxes, with the opportunity to earn 20 more pages by completing various quests, such as Tweeting about HelloFax. Note that this page allocation does not refresh monthly as the paid accounts do. Once you've used up your free pages, it becomes a pay-as-you-go service, costing 99 cents for each fax up to ten pages, and then 20 cents for every page after that. As long as you don't foresee sending more than 10 faxes in a month, the free plan is a good option. Note, however, that free account doesn't give you access to key features, such as sending faxes via email or receiving faxes at all. That said, if you just need a fax service for occasionally sending documents, such as to doctors and insurance companies, this is actually a good option. As someone who rarely has to send a fax, and has no desire to ever receive a fax, I find the arrangement quite appealing. HelloFax's offering is even more tempting when you consider that most fax services do not offer truly free trials at all. Many give you a 30-day window during which you can cancel the service without being charged. But HelloFax's free plan is totally free; you don't even need to enter your credit card information to create an account, as you do with most others. The only other online fax service I've reviewed that comes close to this is , which offers a free trial. With HelloFax, you can choose a fax number from a selection of area codes in Canada, the UK, and in the US. You can also convert your existing number to work with HelloFax instead. You can't get a toll-free fax number with HelloFax, nor can you get a fax number outside those three countries. If you absolutely need an international fax number, consider. Like Biscom 1-2-3, HelloFax lets you manage a team of other users, as mentioned earlier. People in your team can send and receive faxes via the HelloFax web portal or through their email client. You can adjust settings to control who receives faxes, and even add additional lines to your Team. This is a handy feature for anyone who wants to have direct fax lines for different projects or individuals. One of the best HelloFax features is the way the service handles fax attachments, forms, and digital signatures. You can link your HelloFax account directly to including Box, DropBox, Evernote, Google Drive, or Microsoft OneDrive to easily access your files. Once a file is attached, you can use the integrated editor part of the company's HelloSign service to add information, including a digital signature that you can draw with a mouse or upload from a smartphone. With eFax, you can either create a signature with your finger via the eFax mobile app or write your signature on a piece of paper and fax it to yourself. HelloFax does not offer a desktop app or mobile apps and hasn't since I first looked at it a year ago. You can interact with HelloFax via your email client, however, so it's no great loss. MyFax, MetroFax, and Biscom 1-2-3 offer mobile apps if that's important to you. Hands On With HelloFax Signing up for HelloFax is a snap. I especially like that you can choose your own password or use a Google or Microsoft account to login. That's an excellent option, particularly because services like eFax assign you a weak four-digit passcode that they email to you in plaintext. Best of all, HelloFax does not require a credit card to sign up. Yes, I said that once before, but it's worth saying again. Selecting a number with HelloFax is a matter of navigating three pull-down menus for Country, State, and Area Code. It's easy enough, and far better than Biscom 1-2-3, which assigns you a fax number arbitrarily. HelloFax impressed me from the moment I logged in to test it. The service is simple, clear, and responsive. All the key features are easy to find, and unlike , HelloFax manages to look slick without needing to use Flash. The vast majority of fax services have web interfaces reminiscent of ancient webmail sites. HelloFax, on the other hand, looks and feels like a robust, modern service. I particularly like that you can attach files from your computer just by dragging and dropping them from your desktop. It sounds simple, but this is the first time I've seen it offered in a fax service. You can attach up to 40MB of files, which is far more than other services allow. When you attach files, a button appears that lets you edit and sign the files using the built-in editor. Like the main interface, the editor is simple and effective—it's an actual pleasure to use. If the files you're faxing need to be in color and high-res, don't send them via fax. But if you absolutely must, HelloFax faxes along a download link to your attached file to the recipient, along with a passcode to access the attachment. HelloFax also adds an Edit and Resend option, which is great for back-and-forth corrections on a document or for sending the same document to multiple recipients. Sending a fax, with or without an attachment, is just a matter of entering the fax number and pressing send. I like that HelloFax automatically saves fax numbers for future use—a feature oddly missing from much of the competition. All of your faxes, both sent and received, can be viewed from the web portal. I am happy to see that the text of your fax cover sheets is searchable, which makes finding specific messages easy. Like every other fax service I've tested, HelloFax lets you send and receive faxes through your email client. By default, you receive a PDF of incoming faxes to the email address of your choice. Recently, I discovered that not only had PCMag thrown out the last of its fax machines, but that we no longer had a functioning phone line to send a fax. Furthermore, I discovered we no longer had a traditional landline in the office. Copper, apparently, is dying. Instead of testing HelloFax by sending and receiving faxes from a physical machine, therefore, I instead sent and received faxes from a competing fax service. It was no obstacle for HelloFax, but it does raise the question: How much longer are faxes going to be around if the underlying infrastructure that supports them is on its way out? True Fax In nearly every respect, HelloFax succeeds where other fax services struggle. Its clean, modern interface alone is worth the price of admission, but the services also provides a good value and comes with powerful tools that make short work of any fax job. The company's free offering, while limited, is serviceable for anyone who only occasionally sends a fax and doesn't need to receive faxes in response. HelloFax's only limitation is the number of countries for which you can obtain a fax number. If you need to secure a fax number outside Canada, the UK, or the US, consider MyFax. Given all that, HelloFax is our Editors' Choice for online fax services. Software Analyst Max Eddy is a Software Analyst, taking a critical eye to Android apps and security services.
